With the strike now ended and Awards season starting, there will be an onslaught of campaigning, including interviews, ads, and events. We are coming up on the original intended date of one of the first events of the awards season: The Honorary Oscar Ceremony. November 18 (now taking place in January due to the recently ended SAG-AFTRA strike).
The Academy Honorary Award (formerly the Special Award) was created in 1928 and has historically honored achievements that the Academy has not covered. Some unique honorees that would be precursors to more established awards include The British Ministry of Information for their WWII documentary Target for Tonight (1941), in the form of a Certificate of Merit, Walt Disney received one of the more creative forms for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: A statue accompanied by seven miniature statues. The film industry was still so early in its stages that achievements like these were genuinely worth celebrating in a fun way.
